The Wayeb Ceremony

The Mayan calendar has 18 months, each consisting of 20 days for a total of 360 days. Then the Wayeb, a period of celebration that lasts 5 days, giving the yearly calendar a full 365 days. The Wayeb is a 5 day long period that is like our “New Years Eve” and “Thanksgiving” combined. There is prayer, feasting, music and traditional dances. It is a period of giving thanks for another year of life. There are family gatherings as well as events for the whole village. The local Churches have services asking blessings for the community in the coming year. The Wayeb is a time of reflection, gratitude and hope for the future. And a whole lot of fun!
