Welcome to Maya First
Maya First is a US based non-profit organization dedicated to helping the Maya children with education, while preserving their rich culture and environment. Many cannot afford school past the third grade. Maya First is involved in many projects, such as heritage cultural tourism, ethnobotanical research and tourism, reforestation, agroforestry, permaculture and developing bio-diesel from the Jatropha plant. We are attempting to create sustainable jobs in balance with the environment.
The Mayans are very disenfranchised, similar to the plight of the Native Americans in the United States prior to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's and 70's. The world-wide economic downturn has resulted in an increased need for sustainability among the Maya people whose primary income comes from site work, as well as from the sales of handmade crafts and home grown products to visiting tourists.
It is our goal as Maya First (a Non-Profit Wisconsin based Organization in the United States of America and is a domestic 501 (c) 3 public charity and an NGO pending recognition by the Government of Belize) to bring awareness and opportunities to the ancient Maya People of Belize. Maya First will be the voice that shares the long history, fascinating culture, enduring pain and intriguing daily lives of the Maya. By providing an opportunity for visitors to interact with the Maya and their culture, Maya First will be joining with a spirited culture and helping local Maya residents who want to make a difference Today and Tomorrow.
We are an Organization growing quickly and are looking to influence a better and more productive life for the Maya People. We plan on achieving this by helping every young person acquire an education in both Primary and Secondary Educational Institutions. We are going to put together a newsletter that will update the profiles and biographies of some of those in need. Our appeal is simple. We are seeking donors to be entrusted and blessed in sponsoring one or more of these precious youth as well as improve environmental, social, and economic conditions.
My name is Jay Krieger, I am from Wisconsin. I first came to Central America 20 years ago. I saw the native Maya children in Guatemala and Belize, I have never forgotten the conditions I witnessed there. We have been working in Belize for four years now, and our hope is that someday will be able to help all native Maya children throughout Central America.
